It was back in 1963 that David Hernandez gave life to Hotel Posada Río Cuale, one of the original hotels in Puerto Vallarta. With only seven rooms, the hotel excelled at offering family style hospitality along with unique culinary creations at its restaurant, Le Gourmet, the oldest gourmet establishment in town. As Puerto Vallarta’s hotel industry evolved and the original building deteriorated, Jose Luis Hernandez, who took over his father’s business in 1979, was faced with a difficult decision. He could have easily sold this prime piece of property, located just south of the Rio Cuale, but instead decided to keep the family legacy in the family, spearheading his own condo project.
In doing so, he could have pursued a much taller and ambitious building, but he didn’t. He could have opted for a modern-looking building, but he wouldn’t. Instead, he relied on architect Alfredo Pardo Labastida, a Puerto Vallarta resident for the past 25 years, to design a small building with abundant Mexican colonial touches that would more appropriately blend with the neighborhood.
Unfortunately, his father would not live long enough to see his original creation transformed; however, with only 24 condominiums, 8 commercial spaces and enough room for the return of Le Gourmet in the near future, David Hernandez would have most certainly approved of the result.
